How to Make Seamless Scrappy Binding Using Spoonflower

So many ideas, so little time! This is an easy peasy one so I had to jump on here to share.

As many of you know, I’ve been uploading OOP fabric collections to Spoonflower. I am in LOVE with the possibilities for their Fill-A-Yard™ fabric option. Have you ever tried it out? If not, this feature enables you to create custom panels/cheater fabric using their templates and whichever prints you choose from a collection. For one yard, you can select up to 42 prints – which I did using Terrain for the panel shown in the photo below. You can fill multiple squares with the same print to create larger swatches, strips or fat quarters.

Over the weekend, I had an epiphany! You could use this panel to make seamless scrappy binding…so I did. Here’s how:

  1. Visit Spoonflower and use the “Fill a yard” feature to create scrappy looking rows.

  2. Cut rows apart, then cut each row in half. I like to make binding strips 2 1/2” wide, so each row will yield 2- 21/2” x 42” lengths

  3. Sew strips together end-to-end to make one long strip. Make sure to mix them up so no two rows follow each other consecutively.

  4. Fold and press strip in half to make binding as you usually would.

  5. That’s IT!
